REVIEW: Georgetown Cupcakes Buckhead (Atlanta, GA)

Hey readers,

Three words: I LOVE CUPCAKES! Being the dessert-eating connoisseur that I am, I've eaten cupcakes from around the world and have loved them way before it even became a trend to do so. Ever since I was in diapers, I always preferred noshing on cupcakes as opposed to actual cake-not only is it so much easier to handle and cleaner to eat, it's so convenient in that no one has to argue over the "bigger piece," especially since they're all about the same size, frosting included. Although the trend has seemed to die down over the past few years now that macarons and cronut-knockoffs are taking over the country by storm, there's just something about cupcakes that gives them a soft spot in my heart. So, with more and more cupcakeries or cupcake boutiques opening up in Atlanta, the one that really caught my eye the most was Georgetown Cupcakes. Ever since my 3-hour layover in DC a few years ago where a friend met me up and brought a small pink box filled with their sweet treats tucked inside, I've fallen in love with their perfect cupcake and have yet to find a similar place that could even compare with the perfect cake:frosting ratio that they've got going on here. I know a good cupcake when I taste one, so trust me when I say that there a very few places that can impress me and even blow me away! After years of waiting for a DC Cupcake to open in Atlanta, I'm proud to say that they're finally here to stay & are located in good ol' Buckhead, too! Before you head on over to your closest location, be sure to follow them on social media as each location gives away 100 FREE cupcakes every day if you simply say the secret word of the day (no purchase necessary)-WOOHOO!

Let's get started:

✽Free Cupcake of the Day: Chocolate Strawberry

✽Assorted Cupcakes: Cherry Blossom, Salted Caramel, Strawberry Lava Fudge and Hummingbird

✽FOOD (5/5): OH BABY! These cupcakes were even better than I remembered! Prior to making my visit, I made sure to check out their flavors calendar to determine which day would have the flavors I wanted to try the most. I came in on a wednesday afternoon and decided on a day where they offered the salted caramel and lava fudge cupcakes on the same day, in addition to their monthly rotating flavors which included the cherry blossom and hummingbird cupcakes. Before I talk about each of the cupcakes individually, I think it's important to mention that the cake component of each of the cupcakes were incredibly light and moist. I noticed that while the chocolate cakes were a little richer and denser than their vanilla cake counterparts, they were still delicious nonetheless. The salted caramel cupcake was my favorite-the slightly sweet, slightly salty component was wonderful and the caramel core in the center was beyond mind-blowing! Also, the caramel itself had a great gooey consistency-it wasn't too thick or too watery, it was just right. My next favorite was the cherry blossom. True to its name, the cake itself was chocked full of sweet cherries & the flower fondant on top was the cutest addition to this fresh tasting cupcake! Next came the hummingbird, which had bananas, pineapples and walnut bits in the cake part and was topped with the tastiest cream cheese frosting I've ever laid my lips on-airy, creamy and tasty! Despite the fondant representing more of a duckling than of a bird (they used the wrong cookie cutter shape), I thought it was still adorably presented with the walnut chunks resembling a nest themselves. Last came the strawberry lava fudge, which was probably the least favorite of mine, possibly due to the fact that I'm not a huge fan of chocolate cake itself. While the fudge core was a great addition, the richness of the chocolate cake didn't pair too well with the fluffy strawberry buttercream because it overpowered its delicate flavor in its entirety. Now if you're looking for a chocolate overload, then this is definitely the flavor for you! But if you're more into vanilla-cake cupcakes, then they have plenty of different options as well. And before I forget to mention, the chocolate strawberry cupcake shown above was the free cupcake of the day. Despite tasting rather similar to the strawberry lava fudge without the fudge, I love that they bake 100 fresh cupcakes daily and give them out to the first 100 customers that whisper the secret word-it's so fun & really goes to show how much they love their customers to be willing to do that on a daily basis!

✽SERVICE (5/5): The young employees that were helping me on the day of my visit were both very friendly and personable. She walked me through the different flavors on display and even made some recommendations on both her personal favorites as well as the monthly specials. Thanks to her, we managed to get our cupcakes wrapped up to go and were in and out within 5 minutes or so. Seeing that they had just opened for the day and weren't swamped as of yet, I still wouldn't have minded waiting in line for a box of their cupcakes any day because they're SO worth it!

✽DECOR (5/5): I absolutely adore the simple and chic decor they've got going on here at Georgetown Cupcakes. The outside is a creative twist on the White House/Black Market storefront, while the inside is bright, clean and pink. All of the cupcakes are beautifully arranged on silver tiered platters with their appropriate flavor tags, making it easy to distinguish one cupcake from another. Additionally, the open kitchen aspect is such a fun and unique addition in that you can watch the bakers bake, decorate and frost cupcakes right in front of you, which I could probably do all day! And like other cupcake boutiques, they've got a few tables here for you to enjoy their yummy cupcakes-just be sure to grab a cold glass of milk because they've got those for sale here as well!

Overall, I'd HIGHLY recommend checking out DC/Georgetown Cupcakes if you're ever on this side of town. The delicious cupcakes, friendly staff and charming atmosphere found here make it a great place to enjoy some sweets by yourself, with your loved ones or as a gift to celebrate or bring to a special occasion. And don't forget what I mentioned earlier: Follow them on Twitter & Facebook to find out what the secret word is and get a free cupcake on the house!

Have a sweet day,
-Sandy
