BOTIWALLA IS NOW OPEN AT PONCE CITY MARKET
The Chai Pani team brings Indian street grill concept to Atlanta development’s Central Food Hall
ATLANTA (April 11, 2016) – Joining an exciting roster of nationally acclaimed brands and local culinary pioneers, Meherwan Irani and the team behind Chai Pani have opened a new Indian street food concept in Ponce City Market today, Monday, April 11, at 6 p.m. Showcasing yet another aspect of the huge and wonderfully diverse world of Indian street food, two-time James Beard Award-nominated chef Meherwan Irani announces that Botiwalla spotlights marinated meats on skewers, cooked on open flame, then served with fresh-made flat bread, fresh herbs and spices, in addition to some chaat favorites making their way over from his acclaimed restaurant Chai Pani in Decatur.
“We are excited to see the dream of Botiwalla turn into a reality,” says Chai Pani executive chef Meherwan Irani. “Botiwalla is basically an homage to my life-long love of kababs and Indian street food from open air grills.” Irani goes on to say, “Introducing new aspects of Indian street food and bold new flavors to the community is something we pride ourselves on, and Ponce City Market is the ideal place to make it happen.”
Irani also adds, “Chai Pani mostly focuses on the world of chaat (multi-textured Indian street snacks), but there's another whole world of street food that comes to life at night in India, that of the Indian grill (or Sigri). There's also a unique and quirky style of restaurant in India referred to as Irani cafes, run by the descendants of immigrants from Iran. This is in fact the history of my own family. I am an Irani. My own grandfather had an Irani cafe, and so I grew up on the Irani kababs, chai, and other great dishes coming out of that kitchen. Botiwalla is inspired by both of those aspects of the Indian culinary universe that I am nostalgic for, the sigri and Irani cafes.”
The Botiwalla menu features tandoori items and kababs, such as skirt steak marinated in vinegar, garlic, ginger and chilies; chicken tikka with classic tandoori spices; lamb seekhkabab with cream, mint and pistachio, and more. Offering a variety of tastes, freshly grilled meats are served on hand-made naan, parathas (flaky flat bread) and pav (a soft roll). Vegetarian kababs, salads and snacks round out the menu. An Indian style high tea during the hours of 3 to 5 p.m., inspired by the menus of Irani cafes is planned to debut in the coming weeks.
Signature dishes include all-natural and sustainably sourced chicken, fish, lamb, pork and steak and specials highlight regional kababs, showcasing Botiwalla’s culinary depth. An open kitchen with a large charbroil grill and tandoori oven serve as the centerpiece of the restaurant, cooking up unexpected dishes and addictive staples to introduce PCM to the wonders of the Indian Street Grill.
An exciting beverage program complements the quick serve, casual atmosphere. A permit for alcohol is in the works, but Botiwalla is opening with some very exciting non-alcoholic creation. The program was developed by a winning combination of acclaimed cocktail masters from the team’s existing concepts Chai Pani Decatur, Chai Pani Asheville and sister bar and lounge MG Road. Signature non-alcoholic drinks include “housemade mango lassis,” “tamarind cola,” “pineapple turmeric soda,” “nimbu pani” and soon to come (with our liquor license) large-batch & bottled cocktails.
Longtime Chai Pani brand director Michael Files drew from his own experience of Irani cafes and the streets of India for the design of Botiwalla. The space is greatly influenced by the wonderful mishmash of crumbling Victorian architecture and design elements, as well as the humor and vibrancy of Indian visual culture. The decor features richly colored, hand-painted signs, posters and decorative items from trips to India and photos and objects from the Irani family archives. Great attention has been given to the space by Files and Irani in partnership with DeCarlo Architecture to transform it for diners into a true Indian street experience, complete with the savory aromas, sizzling sounds and palpable energy associated with the venerable street vendors that Botiwalla emulates.
About the Chai Pani Team:
Created by husband and wife team Meherwan and Molly Irani and first introduced in Asheville, N.C. in 2009, Chai Pani does away with traditionally formal Indian dining and delivers a menu and atmosphere as diverse as the country’s own culture. Featured in The New York Times, GQ, New York magazine, Food and Wine magazine and on Fox News, Chai Pani has changed the preconceived notions that most Americans have about Indian food with a variety of authentic menu options ranging from chaat (small plates) and sandwiches to uttapam (Indian crepes), thalis (home style entrees), desserts, beverages and signature craft cocktails. A second Chai Pani location opened in Decatur, Ga., in March 2013. Following two consecutive James Beard Award nominations for “Best Chef: Southeast,” executive chef Meherwan and the Chai Pani team have recently opened Buxton Hall in Asheville, N.C., focusing on whole-hog, wood-fired barbecue and Botiwalla located in Atlanta’s Ponce City Market development, with a focus on the Indian street grill.

INDULGE IN THE SOUTH’S ULTIMATE EPICUREAN WEEKEND JUNE 2 – 5, 2016 IN ATLANTA
TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, MARCH 18 WITH EARLY BIRD PRICING THROUGH APRIL 15
ATLANTA – In the company of more than 250 chefs, sommeliers, mixologists, pitmasters and artisans hailing from Texas to the District of Columbia, the sixth annual Atlanta Food & Wine Festival returns to Midtown Atlanta June 2-5. Promising to surprise and delight attendees once again, the four-day weekend showcases the rich food and drink traditions of the South through a variety of Learning Experiences, Tasting Tents, Dinners & Events and Masterclasses - all designed to educate and entertain guests from the novice to the connoisseur.
“The vision of the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival was born from a passion for great Southern food and drink, and a desire to learn from the talented professionals who are shaping the future of our region’s food-ways, while also embracing the traditions and history of the past,” says Dominique Love, Festival Co-Founder. “Our event is part conference, part party and is designed to teach guests about the past, present and future of the region’s food and drink scene. It is as informative as it is decadent.”
Among the many returning Festival favorites, the 2016 event will feature a number of new additions including:
A Series of Masterclasses
For the more serious and seasoned food and drink lover, the Festival’s new Masterclass series will offer expanded learning experiences. These two-hour sessions delve into topics ranging from in-depth wine pairings led by Master Sommeliers to a class on rare bourbons and country hams.
An Expanded Advisory Council
Guests will see a number of new faces on this year’s Advisory Council, an illustrious group of chefs and beverage experts from across the South. “Each year, we challenge our Advisory Council to develop educational, entertaining, and fulfilling classes to give our guests a real sense of our food and drink history and future,” say Love. “The process takes a few months and has become quite competitive among council members, with each member developing a series of class and event concepts.”
Destination Delicious: The Ultimate Road Trip Party
Located in The Stave Room at American Spirit Works, this year’s kick-off party, Destination Delicious presented by The Local Palate, will take guests on a virtual road trip through some of the South’s top food and drink destinations. It’s about the journey, not the destination.
Sunday Brunch
In 2015, the Festival hosted a Sunday brunch event with service inspired by Chef Kevin Gillespie’s Gunshow restaurant. The event was a tremendous success and will now be the featured activity on Sunday morning. This year’s Sunday Brunch will include a VIP brunch at Vineyard in the City and a general admission brunch at the Loews Atlanta Hotel, food and drinks by more than 15 chefs and mixologists, and live music.
Tasting Tents
The Atlanta Food & Wine Festival’s coveted Tasting Tents are an all-you-can-indulge experience, featuring the best flavors of the South. Located in the Greensward Promenade area of Piedmont Park, the new Tasting Tent location offers ample space and seclusion. Lots of outdoor green space and a gorgeous fountain provide a haven for sommelier and mixologist lounges, a Pairings Tent, live music, tailgating areas outfitted for barbecuing and relaxation, and a pick-your-garnish cocktail garden. The curated Tasting Tents allow guests to delve deeper than ever into interactive experiences, featuring a number of themes, such as Southern Staples, Southern Around the World, Southern Tailgating and Southern Provision. Friday’s Tasting Tents will take place at nighttime this year, giving guests the ideal end to their work week.
Vineyard in the City
The first of its kind in the US, the Festival’s pop-up vineyard and event venue will provide a unique backdrop for Masterclasses and events during the weekend, including a “Grapes from A to Z” Wine Luncheon with Master Sommeliers and a VIP Sunday Brunch. Located in the former Atlanta Symphony Hall lot of 14th Street, Vineyard in the City is hosted byBoymelgreen Development and presented by PNC Bank. German Beer Garden-Inspired Backyard at Revival Features a Food Truck,
Easy-Drinking Beverages, Tokens and Friendly Games of Cornhole
This latest creative culinary brainstorm includes a food truck where guests can sample executive chef Andreas Müller's inspired takes on classic German beer garden snacks, including grilled rye with Kartoffelkäse, Bavarian-style pretzels with hot mustard and Obatzda and grilled sausages with sauerkraut, mustard and beef fat-fried potatoes. The drink list offers a selection of European-style draft and bottled session beers, Old World-style wines, punches and batched cocktails.
Backyard revelers won’t have to worry about keeping track of a tab, either. Upon arrival, guests purchase tokens - $5 each - from the Communion cashier and spend them on drinks and food truck purchases. Any unused tokens can be used on future visits. Most food truck snacks and drinks are 1-3 tokens, with server and bartender gratuities already factored into the price of each.
“In the truest sense of the word, Communion means ‘to share,’ and that is our guiding inspiration behind the new outdoor space,” explains Gillespie. “We love to treat our guests like family at Revival, extending that hospitality to cookouts in the front yard and supper on the side porch. Now, the backyard is our final addition. It's a place where friends and neighbors can meet and share a drink, a snack from our food truck or play a game of horseshoes together."
Communion opens Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m. behind Revival. Operating hours are Thursdays and Fridays beginning at 4 p.m. and at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and 12:30 p.m. on Sundays (weather permitting).
About Communion:
Communion is an extension of Revival, offering an outdoor gathering spot for imbibing and socializing in the backyard of chef Kevin Gillespie’s Decatur restaurant.
