I just wanted to apologize in advance for the lack of posts on my blog lately! I've been incredibly busy and unfortunately, blogging just hasn't been at the top of my to-do list. As much as I love exploring this beautiful city and sharing some of the best eats you'll find here, blogging about all of my adventures can get incredibly overwhelming at times, especially when I travel, which explains why you'll find me posting more on Instagram. After doing some thinking and listening to a few awesome suggestions from fellow friends and family members, I decided that it's time to switch things up here on BV. So, in order to crank out more posts for ya'll in the future, I'm going to significantly cut down the wording to keep things short, sweet and straight to the point. This may mean cutting out background information, stories and other miscellaneous things I like to ramble on and on about, but I promise that if it's a fun story, I'll most definitely share it. However, if I'm covering an event or attending a tasting, I'll be sure to keep those detailed and full of pictures just like before, since so many of ya'll have let me know how much you've enjoyed me doing that!
2016 is going to be an incredible year of exciting adventures, mouthwatering eats and so much more! I honestly can't wait to share it all with you!
A few months back, a couple of my co-workers and I were in the Old Fourth Ward area of Atlanta to attend a seminar at a nearby hospital. Since the seminar didn't start until 5PM that Saturday evening, one of them suggested grabbing a late lunch so that we wouldn't have to eat boring cafeteria food, so of course we all delightfully agreed. We wanted something relatively fast and casual, so when someone mentioned if there were any good restaurants nearby for pizza and wings, I remembered having Jack's on my list of places to eat and suggested that as a choice, which brings us to where we are now.
Let's get started:
♫Exterior
♫Menu
♫Soul Food Pizza (Fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes & gravy drizzle): If you're looking for out-of-the-ordinary pizza, then Jack's soul food pizza certainly fits the bill! I mean, does it really get any more Southern than fried chicken, collard greens and gravy? I didn't think so and on a pizza no less! I'll admit, the fried chicken aspect is fun and different, but it just tasted like Tyson's chicken fingers. I would've much rather the skin be fresh and crispy and the chicken itself be moist and juicy. The collard greens, however, were slightly sour, just how I like them! They were flavorful and paired well with the creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, which negated any issue(s) I may have previously had with the chicken! All in all, I'd definitely recommend giving this a taste!
♫Supreme (Pepperoni, ground beef, ground sausage, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, green peppers and white onions): Onto something a little more classic, a slice of supreme pizza with all the goods in top! Although the pizza base couldn't necessarily hold the abundance of toppings, here's where the pizza folding technique came nicely in hand. A healthy serving of tasty ham, sausage, veggies and more, if you're afraid of trying their other specialty 'zas, this one's a safe bet!
♫2 slices could barely fit on a plate!
♫Strawberry Lemon Pepper Wings: HOLY MOLY! These baked wings were absolutely divine! The wings themselves were juicy, fragrant and had a nice crisp to them without the feeling of oil coating your mouth, while the strawberry lemon pepper sauce just took it to the next level! Sweet & savory, it's definitely one combination that you would've never thought would work well together! That can be said for a handful of Jack's fun wing flavors too! Hands down, these were some of the BEST wings I've had in Atlanta! Now if you aren't a fan of pizza, which you'd probably be insane in the membrane if you weren't, then you've got to give their wings a try!
♫FOOD (4/5): Extensive menu featuring unique pizzas, wing flavors, sandwiches, appetizers, salads and more! Not your run-of-the-mill pizza joint, but a local favorite opened late nights and with great drink specials as well. Whether or not you're brave enough to get fried chicken or hot dogs on your pizza or would rather stick to a classic cheese or pepperoni, Jack's has got it all! Just make sure whatever you decide to order, you do yourself a favor and get an order of their baked wings. I promise you won't regret it!
♫SERVICE (2/5): Service was pretty good considering they were slammed around 2-3PM on a Saturday afternoon. We were immediately greeted and seated at one of the many booths in the arcade room. After taking down our drink orders, our server (who's name I can't recall) returned and walked us through the menu. She made some great recommendations for my co-workers and I, which definitely came in handy when it was time to place our orders. When the food arrived at our table, the guys in my group dug in without any hesitation, which explains why I was only able to snap pictures of my meal and not the whole group's meal. Throughout our meal, we felt forgotten since we were only 1 of 2 tables in the arcade room and our server never came by to check up on us. When one of my co-workers tried to find her in the main dining area, he failed to find her as well, so we flagged down a different server and had to ask for drink refills and our checks since we assumed she was probably on break. Again, we waited around for someone to pick up our check and when no one did, I took it to the bar since we'd been waiting around for a long while and were ready to head out to our seminar. Service, while great initially, wasn't very impressive and could certainly use some improvement. However, I do understand the weekend lunch rush, so I won't hold that against them by any means. Just maybe in the future, if an employee goes on break, make sure someone else covers their tables.
♫DECOR (5/5): Their storefront is SO fun to look at! What's not to love about an angry pizza monster with teeth on a navy blue painted building, along with colorful graffiti on the side of the restaurant?! That alone is a 5-star rating for me! Plus, while Jack's looks somewhat small on the outside, it's actually quite spacious inside. There's the main dining room with an extended bar right when you enter the restaurant, followed by an arcade room the further you walk in. Additionally, there's a large covered patio outside as well, which is great for big groups, especially when it's nice out. Since it was rainy and humid on the day of our visit, we opted to sit indoors, but I bet it's packed full of people outside when the weather's nice and the beers are flowing!
Overall, I'd highly recommend checking out Jack's! Their pizza and wings definitely live up to the hype (especially those wings! --I probably sound like a broken record by now!) and it's a popular local establishment within one of the many unique "villages" of Atlanta that will make you re-think "pizza" in a new, funky way! Don't worry though, if you don't like change, they've got plenty of other options for you to choose from as well!
Have a wonderful day,
-Sandy
