Teela Restaurant Group Adds Two More Restaurants to the Family Business
Opening June 2016 in Chastain Square, Filo’s (Greek for “friends”) will be a neighborhood casual diner with patio service, offering unprocessed spitfire rotisserie lambs, pork and chicken, each carved up and served in pita breads. For the omnivores, Filo’s will also offer roasted vegetable pitas, salads and traditional Greek foods such as spanakopita and tiropita, served Greek mezze style.
In July 2016, Arte and Nik will bring Tin Can Oyster Bar to the former location of Shucks Oyster and Wine Bar in Town Brookhaven. Unlike its Sandy Springs’ sister location, which features a full menu of seafood items, the Brookhaven iteration of Tin Can will mostly be about the oyster – east coast oysters, west coast oysters, baked oysters, and seasonal, raw oyster varieties for the true oyster connoisseur.
As man cannot live by oyster alone, the menu will also include an eclectic selection of open-faced toasties: toasties with white anchovies, chopped pimento olives and shaved radish; toasties with diced Ahi tuna tartare, red onions avocado in an olive oil vinaigrette; toasties with traditional vine ripe tomatoes diced in garlic, olive oil shaved Parma cheese; and several more that all demand a sampling.
Mussels, salads, seafood stew, and New England and Manhattan chowders round out the menu.
“Atlanta has been so very good to us and has warmly welcomed every restaurant concept my sister and I have created in our 21 years here,” said Nik Panagopoulos. “We’re excited to see our Teela Restaurant Group growing, adding our younger brother to our team, and bringing to Atlanta diners more of our vision of how good, inexpensive food should taste when you don’t sacrifice quality or creativity.”

BELLINA ALIMENTARI WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF GIZZY BARTON
All-Female Team Behind Italian Dining Sensation at Ponce City Market
“What I love about Gizzy is she strongly believes in our philosophy of food as a way of life,” Baum notes. “She is excited about spending time with our customers and inspiring them with traditional Italian cooking presented in an easy, approachable way.”
Barton plans to sample her way through the menu before applying her deft Italian touch. “Like Tal, I believe in taking a seasonal approach to food preparation. I’m looking forward to incorporating even more fresh produce from our local farmers into our summer selections.”
If you ask Barton her favorite menu items at Bellina, she’ll cite the pappardelle with Bolognese and the Market’s charcuterie and cheese section. “Our pappardelle is a classic; something that everyone enjoys,” she says. “Give me a picnic basket filled with a little meat, a little cheese, olives and some fresh vegetables, and I’m happy, too.”
An Atlanta native, Barton credits her father with igniting the spark that culminated in her decision to attend Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Atlanta. “My father was very passionate about food and cooking for us,” she says. “He used to take my sister and me shopping at Your DeKalb Farmers Market. Although I remember initially being terrified of the live blue crabs, by the time I was in first grade he had taught me how to deconstruct them and showed me just how delicious they were. The sights and smells of those days are the reason I still enjoy grocery shopping. There’s always something new to see and try.”
Of all the lessons gleaned from her mentors, one stands out as Barton takes on her new role. “In the midst of the hustle and bustle of an evening, my goal is to stay calm. I was taught, ‘your job is easy; all you have to do is make it taste good.’ That’s exactly what I plan to do.”

GUNSHOW HOSTS “TOP CHEF” FAVORITE AND "CUTTHROAT KITCHEN" WINNER KENNY GILBERT FOR “HIRED GUNS” DINNERS ON JUNE 12 AND 13
Limited Seating on Sale May 12 at 8 a.m.
ATLANTA– The 2016 “Hired Guns” series at Gunshow has arguably featured the strongest lineup yet, with guest chefs like Brian Voltaggio and Vishwesh Bhatt already gracing the kitchen at award-winning chef Kevin Gillespie’s Glenwood Park restaurant. That tradition of excellence continues in June, when chef Kenny Gilbert of Gilbert's Underground Kitchen in Fernandina Beach, Florida, stops by on Sunday, June 12 and Monday, June 13. Gilbert, best known for his appearance on the seventh season of “Top Chef,” where he became one of the most likeable contestants in the show’s history, will mingle with diners and share his innovative take on tropical and traditional cuisine.
Restaurateur, chef, cookbook author and speaker Gillespie will be cooking alongside Gilbert both nights, along with executive chef Joey Ward and Gunshow’s renowned stable of “kitchen dudes.” A limited number of tickets are available for purchase starting at 8 a.m. on May 12 via Xorbia. The cost is $95 per person (not including drinks, tax and gratuity).
“My passion for cooking and creating with local ingredients is a hallmark of Gilbert's Underground Kitchen, and that same kind of passion is evident in the approach Kevin and Joey take at Gunshow,” says Gilbert. “I’m thrilled they’ve asked me to take part in the unique Gunshow experience, and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them and the whole crew.”
Gilbert displayed an enthusiasm and curiosity for cooking as a young boy in suburban Cleveland, acquiring his own small Weber grill at the age of seven. By the time he was 11, Gilbert was cooking his family’s entire Thanksgiving dinner on his own. After high school, he earned a degree in culinary arts from The Pennsylvania Culinary Institute and worked his way to chef de cuisine at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island by the age of 23.
Gilbert’s career has taken him from Florida and Sea Island, Georgia (where he oversaw four dining concepts at The Lodge Sea Island Golf Resort and cooked for the G8 Summit during President George W. Bush’s administration), to Colorado, New Jersey, Japan, Spain, France and the Caribbean. He has appeared on "The Today Show," written his own autobiography/cookbook and created a line of spice blends. He has cooked for the Sports Illustrated Super Bowl party and celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Samuel L. Jackson and television personality A.J. Calloway, among many others.
“The best thing about these ‘Hired Gun’ events is the fresh energy and ideas that our guest chefs bring to the kitchen,” says Gillespie. “Kenny focuses on seasonal Southern cuisine, kind of like we do, but he comes at it from such a different and varied perspective. We’re all really eager to see what he’s got planned. This is going to be an exciting couple of nights.”
The remaining 2016"Hired Guns" lineup is as follows:
- May 22-23: Brian Baxter of Husk Nashville (Just a few seats remain at Xorbia.)
- September 11-12: Brooke Williamson of Hudson House in Redondo Beach, California (Tickets on sale August 11 at 8 a.m.)
- October 23-24: Vivian Howard of Chef & the Farmer in Kinston, North Carolina (Tickets on sale September 23 at 8 a.m.)
Gunshow is located at 924 Garrett Street. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Reservations are accepted but not required. Guests may park in the Glenwood Park parking lot and on the street. For more information, visit gunshowatl.com or call 404-380-1886.
